I made this photo of Palmyra’s Temple of Baalshamin at dawn in 2009. It felt like standing in a tiny jewel box of treasures and history. Now it’s gone forever. The columns, the altar and the tree blown up and destroyed by IS. I’m thinking of what is lost and I’m also thinking of the people of Palmyra, who have no food or medicine and are trying to escape by running off into the desert… ©Annie Wright Photography
