Returning to Orkney in the summer, I am experiencing the simmer dim, an eternal twilight where nights are brief or even non-existent. Right now darkness descends shortly before midnight and daylight is back by 4 am. This means that the days are far longer than usual and you can opt to change your waking pattern radically. So, in the next few days, my plan is to set my alarm for 3 am and go out for a solitary walk through the field as the sun rises. Maybe the little cat I’m looking after will accompany me… She will be looking for voles and I for beauty and the wonders of this earth.
